Saxonburg council appoints member
SAXONBURG — A research programmer for Carnegie Mellon University is the newest borough council member.
Scott Herbst, 45, of West Main Street was appointed Wednesday to fill a vacant seat on council.
“I am thrilled and humbled to answer the call to serve my hometown,” he said. “I am eager to get to work on the borough’s business, and I am excited to work with the fantastic, dedicated group of individuals who make up this council.”
Herbst said he was interested upon hearing about the open seat.
“I applied for the seat because I love my hometown and have always wanted to become more involved in the community,” he said.
After Herbst spoke last year at a borough meeting about a proposed zoning change a few people asked him if he would ever consider serving on council.
“I’m hoping to be able to leverage my education and professional experience to the benefit of the borough,” he said.
He was the zoning and code management officer for Butler in 1994, working with city council to turn the engineer’s office into the Office of Business and Community Development.
Herbst has a master’s degree in public policy and management from Carnegie Mellon and a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering.
Herbst fills the vacancy created when Bill Gillespie was named mayor in early March. Gillespie succeeded former Mayor Pam Bauman, who died in February.
