Clarion pair grounds Falcons
FOXBURG - Too bad the football game Friday night between Clarion and A-C Valley wasn't a boxing match, because Clarion has one heck of a one-two punch.
The tandem of Chris McSwain and Manny Carpin gained 212 of Clarion's 244 total yards and scored both Bobcats touchdowns as Clarion shut out A-C Valley, 13-0.
The Clarion win combined with the Clarion Limestone loss to Moniteau gives the Bobcats a share of the KSAC title.
"Our kids have worked hard all season," said Clarion coach Larry Wiser. "Looking back, I don't think anybody gave us much of a chance to do anything."
Clarion got on the board with 7:27 left in the second quarter when quarterback Sean Wolf faked the handoff to Carpin and rolled to his right and hit Chris McSwain with a 20-yard scoring strike in the back of the end zone.
"That is the second time (McSwain) has caught that pass," said Wiser. "We come out in a run formation and it kind of surprises (people)."
Wolf completed 7 of 18 passes for 83 yards and one interception.
With time winding down in the first half, A-C Valley attempted a fake punt on fourth-and-1 from its own 31-yard line.
However, the pass from Luis Goncalves to Hank Heeter fell incomplete.
After a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on A-C Valley set up the Bobcats at the Falcons 10-yard line, Clarion scored when Wolf threw a 10-yard dump pass to Carpin, who scampered into the end zone
On its first drive of the second half, A-C Valley moved to the Clarion 11-yard line.
However, Justin Arner picked off a Brad Rembold pass in the end zone to end the Falcons threat.
A-C Valley had another scoring opportunity earlier in the game when it had the ball at the Clarion 18-yard line.
Three plays later, Goncalves attempted a 41-yard field goal that sailed wide right.
Goncalves gained 103 total yards for the Falcons.
"I told the kids 'You can be mad over how this ended up, but we beat ourselves tonight,'" said A-C Valley coach Randy Lemmon.
"I don't think these kids feel disappointed over what happened this season. Think about what we have been through the past couple years," he added. "Really, this team should have won five games."
With the loss, the Falcons finished the season 3-6.
