Eagles earn another shutout; await playoff fate
GROVE CITY - The Grove City High School football team finished the regular season with a bang.
The Eagles hope there will be more of those bangs in the near future.
A 28-0 home victory over Brookville Friday night extended the Eagles' winning streak to seven, with six coming by way of a shutout.
Grove City (7-2) has given up just 14 points since the second week of the season.
"In high school football it's tough to win seven games in a row." Grove City coach Jeff Bell said. "The defense wanted another shutout and they got it, so I'm happy for the kids.".
The Eagles scored their first touchdown on a 2-yard run by senior fullback Jack Vallely. The score was set up when Vallely scampered 77-yards before being brought down at the 2-yard line.
Grove City scored again just as the second quarter began when senior Dan Wise capped another long drive with a 2-yard run.
The Eagles managed to reach the scoreboard once more in the first half as senior quarterback Jim Jaskowak threw a bullet to junior receiver Jessie Alfreno, who caught it in stride and dashed 73 yards for the touchdown.
Brookville (3-6) came out strong in the third quarter and managed to drive the ball deep into Grove City territory.
But just as it appeared as if the Raiders would dent the scoreboard, senior Nick Heschke threw an errant pass that was picked off by the defensive back Adam Rudolph to end the drive and Brookville's best chance to score.
"Their defense was obviously good. It's been good all year," Brookville coach Chris Dworek said.
Grove City scored its final touchdown on a 2-yard run by Vallely, who finished the night with 143 yards and two touchdowns.
"They have big-play weapons," Dworek said. "I mean, we held them in check most of the night, but they have that big play capability. One little mistake hurts us."
Friday night was senior night for the Eagles, and Bell lauded their efforts.
"I've got a great group of seniors," Bell said. "There are some great leaders here, and hopefully these younger kids are watching what they are doing because they are really a great group of kids."
Bell and the Eagles must endure 48 hours of waiting to see if they will get a bid into the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
The Eagles were fighting with Fort LeBoeuf, which squeaked past Iroquois 14-13, for the final at-large bid. Fort LeBoeuf is also 7-2.
"We will have to wait until Sunday night to find out if we've made the playoffs," Bell said. "I think we've earned it, and in a tight playoff situation, I like our chances."
