It's over: Union ends season 0-10

RIMERSBURG - Union football coach Tom Kidder stood in a small circle of players and challenged them.

He implored them to get stronger, get faster and to see the better days on the horizon.

The bad days are behind them now. A 0-10 season, culminated by a 57-0 home loss to Lakeview Friday night, is in the record books. Now, a new season begins for the Golden Knights.

"We're going to get stronger for the upcoming season," Kidder said. "I challenged them there in the huddle to get stronger. We're going to get into the weight room three times a week and start conditioning for next year. If they do the workouts that I have for them, we'll be able to compete next year."

Union was unable to compete against Lakeview for much of the game Friday night.

The Sailors scored on their first seven possessions of the first half and were stopped at the Union 1 at the end of the half only because of a fumble.

Danny Van Slyke was particularly lethal to Union, scoring on touchdown runs of 23, 1, 6, 10 and 21 yards as he totaled 308 yards on 23 carries.

Van Slyke finished the season just shy of 2,000 yards.

"Tom's a real nice guy and I didn't want to run the score up," said Lakeview coach Dan York. "I even told Danny if he breaks loose to run out of bounds."

Tyler Shearer also scored three touchdowns and gained 86 yards on 14 carries.

Lakeview (7-3) narrowly missed making the District 10 playoffs but was kept out of the postseason by a poorly timed loss to Kennedy Catholic.

The Sailors, whose band plays "Anchor's Away" after every score and got plenty of practice Friday, rushed for 403 yards.

Union was unable to mount any kind of threat until the final minutes of the contest.

The Golden Knights didn't cross into Lakeview territory until there was just 1:43 left in the fourth quarter.

"We just don't match up well on the line, and when you don't match up well on the line, there's not much that you can do," Kidder said.

Colton Davis rushed for 72 yards on 16 carries, but 62 of his yards came on Union's final drive, which stalled at the Lakeview 1 as time expired.

York put much of his first-team defense back in the game to keep the Golden Knights out of the end zone.

"Some people asked if they ran up the score on us," Kidder said. "I don't think so."

In fact, York lamented the score and said he expected next year's rematch in Week 7 to be much tougher.

"Tom is a class guy," York said. "And if given some time, he can turn things around here."

That is the ultimate goal for Kidder, who has experience in these sorts of things. He took over a Moniteau program that struggled through a tough first season before making strides.

"The first year is the toughest year," Kidder said. "This is by far the toughest year I've coached. It's just a tough situation right now."
