Moniteau hopes to take out frustrations on A-C Valley

True, A-C Valley has been outscored 105-0 through its first two games.

And, true, the Falcons have been outscored 81-7 while losing to Moniteau each of the past three years.

Moniteau coach Steve Wilson doesn't care.

"We're 0-2. We haven't proved anything to anybody," Wilson said. "Who are we to overlook any team we play?

"I subscribe to the any-given-Sunday analogy. You have to come out and play each week and play hard for four quarters."

While A-C Valley has been unable to dent the scoreboard, Moniteau is coming off tough losses of 8-7 and 20-14 to Clarion-Limestone and St. Marys, respectively.

"We were supposed to win both of those games … it didn't happen," Wilson said.

The Warriors own wins of 26-0, 27-7 and 28-0 over A-C Valley in their past three meetings. They hope to wake up a lethargic running game at the expense of the Falcons.

Matt Schandelmeier has 35 carries for 197 yards so far this year while Adam Cousins has 20 carries for 85 yards. Cousins had only seven carries for seven yards last week.

"His knee was bothering him, so we didn't run him all that much," Wilson said of Cousins. "But he's fine now."

St. Marys positioned up to nine defenders in the box against Moniteau, which continued to struggle throwing the football. Garth Kohlmeyer has completed just 14-of-38 passes for 176 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions thus far.

"We expect to see that type of defense every week," Wilson said of teams stacking the line against his offense. "We'll continue to work on improving our passing game, but we won't get away from our running game.

"That's our offense and we have to find a way to do it against any defense."

A-C Valley began summer camp with 30 players, but was down to 22 within three days because of injuries and kids deciding not to play.

"We'll dress 25 or 26 kids Friday," Falcons coach Randy Lemmon said. "We have a lot of young newcomers in our offensive line and that makes it tough."

The Falcons lost one senior starter up front - Chad Forsythe - to a broken leg during the second week of camp.

"A school our size, we only have five or six offensive linemen to begin with," Lemmon said. "When one goes down, you really feel it."

A-C Valley's attack is led by receiver Hank Heeter, who has caught nine passes for 133 yards. Rocco Crapis has seven receptions for 52 yards and 33 carries for 98 yards.

"Any yards Rocco's gotten, it's been pretty much on his own," Lemmon said. "We haven't been able to open many creases for him."

Sophomore quarterback Brad Rembold has completed just 15-of-46 passes for 147 yards, no touchdowns and eight interceptions.

"I'm not sure how they haven't scored yet, given the personnel they have," Wilson said. "They can line up in a power-I formation on one play, then go five-wide in a run-and-shoot the next. Not many teams can do that."

Despite the interceptions, Lemmon said his team will continue to throw the football.

"Brad's young and he's learning," the coach said. "We've told him not to worry about the interceptions. It's part of the process.

"Our kids won't give up. They're here to play ball, but we don't sugar-coat things for them. We all know where we're at. Right now, our goal is to be competitive.

"I'm not happy with the teams Moniteau has played. Now they (Moniteau) are coming to our place 0-2 and they want to take it out on us … and they're still one of the best teams in our conference," Lemmon added.
