Shaler shreds Seneca

JACKSON TWP - Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle might have seen everything the game of football has to offer during Friday night's game against Shaler.

The Raiders' first four possessions ended in two fumbles, a blocked punt and an interception.

Just as discouraging as the miscues themselves was the manner in which Shaler easily converted them into touchdowns.

The Titans never let the Raiders back in the game in a homecoming 49-14 blowout at Raiders Stadium.

"I can't remember a beginning to a game that went so badly for my team," said Butschle, after watching the Titans build a 28-0 advantage after just 14 minutes of play.

"We were fortunate that they made some mistakes early in the game," said Shaler coach Jacque DeMatteo. "And we were pleased to see our kids take advantage of them."

Shaler wide receiver Kevin Hathaway scored four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving, and quarterback Matt Davis was a near-perfect 13-of-15 for 174 yards against the Raiders defense.

But that same defense was able to give the Raiders the momentum early on in the game.

Seneca Valley (1-5, 0-4) won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half.

Butschle obviously wanted his defense to set the tone early. And it did.

After giving up one first down, linebacker Ben Edwards led a swarm of SV defenders in turning away Travis Wolff on a third-down run.

But on Seneca Valley's second play from scrimmage, quarterback Kevan Smith and tailback Lee Layton got crossed up on a handoff attempt and Will Moushey recovered for Shaler at the Raiders' 11-yard line.

Davis scored on a 2-yard plunge four plays later and the Titans (3-3, 2-2) were off and running.

Shaler took advantage of another botched handoff and fumble on SV's next possession.

"(Smith) said he got the handoffs in to (Layton) and Lee said he never got them," said Butschle. "I don't know. I'll have to watch the tape."

Davis hit Curtis McGriff with a 27-yard scoring strike following the second turnover for a 14-0 lead.

The blocked punt was followed by Hathaway's first scoring run of the game.

The Raiders' fourth drive, which featured a 57-yard bomb from Smith to Kevin Mayberry, ended with Matt Dunker's interception of a Smith pass at the Titan 2-yard line.

Hathaway scored from eight yards out at the beginning of the second quarter to cap the Titans' ensuing drive.

"We had the momentum early on," said Butschle. "And if things wouldn't have gone so badly after that, I think that could have continued for us."

The Raiders finally got on the scoreboard with Layton's 2-yard run late in the first half, but the Titans walked to the locker room with a 42-6 lead at the break.

Sophomore quarterback Aaron Palmieri scored on a 7-yard run in relief of Smith late in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
