Mars floods Riverside to earn playoff spot

ADAMS TWP - On the first play from scrimmage, Mars running back Josh Keil was stopped for a 3-yard loss.

That play turned out to be the exception to the rule Friday night.

On the next play, Planets running back Paul Ferrese silenced the Riverside contingent with a 65-yard touchdown run.

Ferrese tacked on two more touchdown runs of 34 and 52 yards on his way to 188 rushing yards to lead the Planets to a 44-0 win.

With the victory, Mars (5-3 overall, 5-1 in the section) secured a WPIAL Class AA playoff berth.

"The defense was pursuing, and I was just cutting back," Ferrese said of his rushing effort. "I didn't really think we would come in here and score that many points. I thought it would be a grind-it-out game."

The outcome could have been worse for Riverside (4-4, 3-3).

Two plays after the first Ferrese score, Mars quarterback D.J. Cannon found Bill Cress open down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown. The play was called back when the Planets were flagged for holding and eventually had to punt.

"We looked at (both teams') records," Mars coach Scott Heinauer said. "We knew if we lost this game on our home field, we possibly could not make the playoffs."

After the touchdown that wasn't, Mars scored each time it touched the ball for the remainder of the half and built a 30-0 lead by halftime.

"We talked all week about coming out ready to play," Heinauer said. "We wanted a shutout. We tried to put a point out here today defensively. I think we wanted to send a statement that we can play defense."

Riverside, which starts only three seniors, couldn't recover from the big plays the Planets produced early. The mercy rule went into effect halfway through the third quarter with Mars ahead 37-0.

"We were prepared for this football game," said first-year Riverside coach Jesse Rosenberger. "We just didn't execute. There were too many mental mistakes."

Even with the loss, Riverside still has an outside shot at a playoff spot. If the Panthers beat Summit Academy next week, they still would need help to make the postseason.

"Right now, we're not a playoff team, and I doubt we're going to make (the playoffs)," Rosenberger said.

Mars' next opponent is conference-leading Mohawk (7-1, 6-0) on the road in a contest that will determine who wins the Tri-County North.

"We know it's going to be a tough game (against Mohawk)," Ferrese said. "We're going to have to practice hard this week, go out there, and try to beat them."

Mohawk, which beat Mars 14-0 last season, hasn't lost since Sept. 2 and has won its conference games by an average of 29 points.

"We have to go up to Mohawk and play football the way we played tonight, and we'll let the best team win at that point," Heinauer said.
