SV looking to end dismal season on high note

It was a season that began with so much promise.

The Seneca Valley Raiders can at least end it with a win.

The Raiders (1-8) will travel to Fox Chapel (1-8) tonight for their season finale.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The latest disappointment for Seneca Valley and its fans was a 47-29 loss at Butler last week.

Still, SV coach Ron Butschle says his players have kept the right attitude.

"It's been a tough season," he said. "But to the players' credit, they've done everything I've asked them to do as far as preparation goes.

"We're going (to Fox Chapel) to win," Butschle added. "We're looking at this as another opportunity. Last year, we won one game. Hopefully this year, we'll end up with two and then we can build on that next year."

A bright spot for the Raiders last week was junior tailback Nate Bradley's 113 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

"Nate was the kid who we expected to be our top back coming into this year," said Butschle. "But he was out for the first part of the season and then Pat Prazer was doing so well when he was in there.

"Nate's a bigger back at six feet and can make some things happen when he gets to the corner."

In last year's final game against Fox Chapel, Bradley got to the corner and turned it into a school-record 95-yard scoring run.

That play helped the Raiders avoid their first-ever winless season with a 37-12 triumph.

Quarterback Kevan Smith has shown some play-making ability on the ground this season, tallying three rushing touchdowns, including a 19-yard scamper against North Allegheny Oct. 7.

"I would have liked to have seen him pull the ball down more this year and try to make a play on the ground," said Butschle of his senior signal caller. "There have been a few times when he's tried to force the ball into tight coverages. He's almost 220 pounds and once he gets moving, he's pretty tough to stop."

SV will encounter a struggling squad in Fox Chapel, which finished in the Quad Southwest cellar this season.

Under first-year head coach Bryan Deal, the Foxes entered this season planning to run a spread offense. But the team's current leading receiver is junior Terry Hartford, who had just 17 catches worth 315 yards and two scores entering last week's game versus Plum.

Junior running back Anthony Schulli has proven to be the team's biggest offensive threat, rushing for 438 yards and four touchdowns.

The Foxes have been outscored 121-6 in their last four games. The team's lone win came in Week 4, a 17-14 victory over Latrobe.

Deal could not be reached for comment regarding tonight's game.
