County gridders make all-star game
Seven Butler County football players will be involved in an annual all-star game Saturday at Cupples Stadium on Pittsburgh's South Side.
Wide receiver-defensive back Shane Snyder and punter Andrew Goettler of Butler will be in action, as will Knoch tight end Greg Braden and linebacker Bill Elliott.
Mars will be represented by running back and Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy winner Paul Ferrese, tight end-linebacker Matt Whittington and lineman Pete King.
The players are members of the Northern Area Football Coaches Association all-stars and will play the City League all-stars. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
"They're all great kids who will contribute a lot to us," said Avonworth coach Jason Kekseo, the head coach of the NAFCA squad. "Everybody's still in shape and ready to play football.
"I love coaching in all-star games."
Snyder will start at defensive back while Goettler will handle the punting duties for NAFCA. Braden will play defensive end and tight end, and Elliott is at middle linebacker.
"That Elliott kid is a beast," Kekseo said. "All three of our linebackers are intense, good football players. I can't wait to turn them loose."
Elliott will be flanked by Jordan LeViere of North Hills and Mike Ward of Hampton.
Ferrese will join Avonworth's Eric Vaughn, who had 1,352 yards rushing this season, in the NAFCA backfield. Whittington is starting at tight end and King will play on both sides of the ball.
Ferrese will return punts and kickoffs as well.
NAFCA's quarterbacks are Ryan Lehmeier of North Hills and Jake Long of Pine-Richland.
The City League stars are led by Division I wide receiver recruit Brandon Laughlin of Schenley. Central Catholic's Andy Vaughn will be his quarterback.
Three sizable linemen anchor the City League stars up front: 6-7, 320-pound tackle Kevin Macon of Oliver, 6-2, 300-pound center Tom Murray of Brashear and 6-4, 305-pound guard Matt Khouri of Schenley.
This will be the fourth straight year this game is being played in the fall. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the gate.
