Oilers surprise Wings in Detroit

DETROIT — Forgive the Detroit Red Wings if Brad Winchester was not in their scouting report.

Winchester, a rookie with one assist in 19 regular-season games who didn't play in Game 1, scored the go-ahead goal to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-2 victory Sunday that tied the first-round series at a game apiece.

Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish played a hunch by putting Winchester in the lineup after he skated with Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Smyth during Saturday's practice.

"A coach has got to be right occasionally," MacTavish said jokingly.

Winchester made it 3-2 less than a minute after Fernando Pisani tied it late in the second period.

Aggressive forechecking by a team doing lot of trapping led to both goals.

Edmonton's Michael Peca forced Kirk Maltby's giveaway in the corner and centered the puck for Pisani's goal. Pronger took the puck from Detroit's Jason Williams along the boards and passed it to Winchester, who scored from between the circles on a hard shot goaltender Manny Legace appeared to have in clear view.

"I just tried to find a hole," Winchester said.

Dwayne Roloson made 33 saves for the Oilers, who also got goals from Chris Pronger and Jarret Stoll.

Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Edmonton.

"Everybody said this was going to be a tough series, so nobody expected us to win all four games," Detroit's Brendan Shanahan said. "We knew we'd have to win a game in Edmonton."

Lightning 4, Senators 3

Martin St. Louis scored his second goal of the game early in the third period and visiting Tampa Bay battled from behind twice to win.

John Grahame made 22 saves for his first win in four career playoff games and Tampa Bay captain Brad Richards had three points, including his first goal of the series to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead in the second period.

St. Louis tied it at 1 in the first and put the Lightning ahead for good 55 seconds after Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Boyle scored to make it 3-3.

Sharks 3, Predators 0

Jonathan Cheechoo had a goal and two assists to get the visiting Sharks even with Nashville in the first-round series in the Western Conference.

The Sharks will look to take the series lead at home in Game 3 on Tuesday night.

If history is an indicator, this was a must win for the Sharks who have never bounced back to win a series they trailed 0-2. They quickly neutralized this season's best home-ice advantage by scoring three power-play goals in the first period.

Mighty Ducks 4, Flames 3

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 22 saves in his return to Anaheim's lineup, helping the visiting Mighty Ducks pull even with the Flames in the Western Conference series. Giguere, the Conn Smythe winner as the playoff MVP in 2003 when Anaheim reached the Stanley Cup final, sat out the series-opening overtime loss Friday night because of a lower-body injury.

Chris Kunitz, Scott Niedermayer, Joffrey Lupul and Samuel Pahlsson scored for Anaheim.
