Grossman, Deal on verge of Moniteau scoring records

CHERRY TWP — Two long standing basketball scoring records at Moniteau High School are about to fall.

And the two players chopping them down couldn't care less.

Senior guards Tyler Grossman and Alyssa Deal are on the verge of breaking the respective Warrior boys and girls career points scored marks. Both records have stood for more than 20 years.

Grossman enters this season with 1,089 career points — 351 shy of the school record set by his father, John Grossman — despite missing a number of games last year with a hamstring injury.

"I guess it will mean something if it happens," the younger Grossman said. "But what I'd rather have is a district championship.

"If you look way down the road … A district title would do a lot more for this program than my breaking the scoring record would."

Like Grossman, Deal cracked the 1,000-point plateau last season and is only a handful of points away from breaking Dee Slater's career scoring mark of 1,157.

"Really, I haven't even thought about it," Deal said. "I mean, I know it's gonna happen, but I couldn't say when and I'm not worried about it.

"We can't worry about individual stuff like that. My goal is to win District 9 and go deep into the playoffs, not to leave here with the scoring record."

Grossman and Deal are much more than scorers. The former averaged 9.2 assists and 9.7 rebounds per game last year. The latter averaged five assists per game a season ago.

Both are capable of playing point guard. Both are more valuable to their teams elsewhere.

"For us to succeed, Tyler has to do a lot," Moniteau boys coach Randy Armagost said. "He needs to score, get the assists, get the rebounds, play good defense.

"He's a third-year captain … the first three-year captain I've ever had."

"I need to get quicker on my feet," Grossman said. "Fundamentally, I can improve my defense. Whatever is needed for us to win, I'll do it."

Warriors girls coach Mark Yeager said Deal is almost like another daughter to him.

"I've enjoyed coaching her as much as I did coaching my own girls, if not more," he said. "I've known Alyssa since she was in second grade.

"She was a manager in this program for years. She's such a fun kid to be around."

Deal wants to improve her rebounding skills entering this year.

"I didn't do my share on the boards last year," she said. "We don't have very much size and we all have to do our share."

Deal did not run cross country this fall despite being one of the top runners in the county the past two years.

"She wanted to put more emphasis on basketball," Yeager said. "Alyssa puts all she's got into everything she does. After last cross country season, she was exhausted."

Grossman and Deal figure to play college ball next year. Grossman is looking at Division II and III schools and made an official visit to Hawaii-Pacific.

"I'm looking to go far away," he said. "I want to be able to commit to whatever school I choose. I liked it out there (Hawaii), but there are other possibilities."

Deal is considering Slippery Rock, St. Francis and Robert Morris for basketball. Georgia, Florida, LSU, Bucknell and Penn are interested in her for track and field.

"There's a lot to consider," she said. "I haven't made up my mind."
