Deal captures Moniteau girls scoring record

CHERRY TWP — Alyssa Deal dribbled to her right, then back to her left, set herself with a little crow hop and buried a 3-pointer.

The crowd, docile and solemn after watching Union roll up a 36-point lead Tuesday night against their Moniteau girls basketball team before Deal's 3-pointer, suddenly erupted in cheers.

That's when Deal realized she had placed her name above all others at Moniteau High School.

With that 3-pointer, Deal scored the 1,159th point of her career, passing the previous school record mark of 1,157 set by Dee Slater in 1984.

The senior guard didn't know she was close to the record until Monday morning when her father mentioned it to her.

"I had no idea," Deal said. "Everyone has been asking me about it."

She needed 11 points heading into the game against the Damsels, and it looked like she would have to wait another night to get the record.

But with 3:06 remaining, she hit the 3-pointer to break the record.

Deal just wished the 3-pointer had more of an impact on the game than it did on the Moniteau record book as Union took an 82-46 victory.

"Actually, I'm mad about losing. I'm really upset," Deal said. "I didn't think we'd get killed by 40. A lot of people were here, and we didn't really give them too good of a show."

Deal has been giving fans a good show since her freshman season, when she stepped onto a senior- and junior-laden Warriors team and contributed immediately.

"The team was deep with juniors and senior that year." she said. They were really accepting of me and they wanted me there. I was happy."

Deal averaged 14.2 points per game as a sophomore and 17.1 points last season.

This year, she is averaging nearly 20 points each night.

She could score 60 points per game, but it wouldn't satisfy her if a loss came with it.

"I'm so mad," Deal said, letting out a frustrated groan. "I'm just so mad. I just wish we would have won."

Moniteau coach Mark Yeager isn't surprised by that attitude.

"That's what makes her such a great kid," Yeager said. "She doesn't care about individual things. She'd trade that for a league title or even a win (against Union)."

Deal has worked hard on her game, even though she has been heavily involved in track and cross country over the course of her high school career.

She is a two-time state qualifier in the distance events in track and field.

Union coach Josh Meeker has seen first-hand what kind of player Deal has become.

"I have the utmost respect for Alyssa," Meeker said. "She's a hard worker and she has a lot of desire. I saw that when she was a freshman. She wants to win and she wants to do the best. I admire her for that."

Meeker designed his defense around limiting Deal on Tuesday. He said most teams try to do the same, yet Deal still finds a way to make an impact.

"Night in and night out she's still breaking 10 and sometimes 20," Meeker said. "She's doing that with teams trying to stop her. She helps her team out in other ways, too. We're going to miss playing against her."
