Rampaging Raiders
JACKSON TWP - The rain and mud couldn't stop Seneca Valley's offense.
Neither could North Allegheny.
The Raiders (4-4) scored nine goals in the second half of their 16-14 win over the Tigers in a Section 1 girls lacrosse showdown Tuesday afternoon.
The game was played in a steady rain, but it didn't deter Seneca Valley's Erin Bernhard from scoring six goals in the win. Laurie Lindner and Megan Powell each scored three times.
The win avenges the Raiders' 9-2 loss to the Tigers earlier this season.
"In our first game with (NA), we had to use mostly junior varsity kids," said Seneca Valley coach Christie Albright. "Today, we had our top scorers in there."
The game was tied at 7 when the teams broke for halftime, but Seneca Valley opened second-half play with four goals in the first 6 minutes, 10 seconds for an 11-7 advantage. Three of the tallies were credited to Powell.
When NA's Alexa Jennings beat Raiders goalie Natalie Kalnas with 7:04 left in regulation, the Tigers had pulled to within 14-13.
But the Raiders' Desiree Palmieri and Bernhard tallied their final goals of the day soon after, giving the home team a 16-13 cushion with 3:34 remaining.
Whitney Wilson and Megan Coleman both scored a hat trick for the Tigers (4-7).
"Offensively, we were able to stay right with (Seneca)," said North Allegheny coach Harry Datz.
Kalnas tallied eight saves in the win while her counterpart, NA's Amanda Chipman, managed 10 stops.
"(Kalnas) is actually our junior varsity goalie," said Albright. "Tonight she stepped up and did the job for the varsity team."
The Tigers held a 4-2 lead after nine minutes of play, but the Raiders reeled off five goals in just over 6:30 - two from Bernhard and Laurie Lindner and another courtesy of Palmieri.
During the scoring spree, North Allegheny was unable to generate any offensive push, and the action was confined to the Tigers own end.
"We had some trouble tonight in our transition game," said Datz. "We just could not get out of our own end and weren't connecting on a lot of our passes."
The Tigers finally came to life near the end of the first half, scoring three goals in just over three minutes. Wilson scored two of the tallies before Laura Peery found the net with 23 seconds left, tying the game at 7.
North Allegheny took the junior varsity game, 9-6.
Both teams will be back in action Thursday.
Seneca Valley will travel to Sewickley Academy while North Allegheny hosts Quaker Valley.
