USC's firepower too much for Seneca
FOX CHAPEL - The Seneca Valley boys lacrosse team isn't used to being outgunned.
But that's exactly what happened to the Raiders in their Western Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association semifinal game against Upper St. Clair Wednesday night.
The Panthers received goals from seven different players, led by Trevor Yealy's five tallies, to take down SV 14-10 at Fox Chapel High School.
For Seneca Valley coach Wayne Jaeckle, the difference in the game was very simple.
"They were the better team tonight," Jaeckle said of the Panthers. "They wanted it more than we did."
With the game tied at six early in the third quarter, USC reeled off four goals in a span of 5 minutes and 17 seconds for a 10-6 advantage.
The Raiders did make the score 10-8 and 11-9, but never again got within a goal of the Panthers.
It was the second time this season the two teams had met. USC prevailed 13-10 in early May.
"We had eight different players score in that first game," said Panthers coach Bruce Atkinson. "Since day one, I've been preaching the team concept to the kids. And you know the old saying - you dance with who brung ya."
The Panthers offense put Seneca Valley on its heels in the early going as USC opened up a 6-1 lead after 17:30 of play.
That's when the Raiders (16-5) found their game.
Eric Derr (2), Sean Cross and Peet Poillon combined to score four goals in the final 4:30 of the first half to pull within 6-5.
"A game is four quarters long," said Jaeckle. "Unfortunately, we decided to play only one."
The Raiders' momentum carried into the second half, as Anthony Eonta scored just 12 seconds into the third quarter to tie the game at 6.
"We just began not playing well and taking stupid penalties," said Atkinson. "I told the guys to treat it like a math problem. Find the variables, figure out the problem and solve it.
"Plus, I told the kids not to get too emotional," Atkinson added. "A little emotion is good, but too much and it starts to control you. We needed to keep level heads."
Derr and Poillon led the Raiders offense with three goals each. Will Robbins added two goals of his own, including his team's first tally that made the score 3-1 with 2:01 left in the opening quarter.
Playing in his last game for the Raiders, senior goalie Rob Beauseigneur recorded 17 saves in defeat, while Travis Nacey stopped 14 shots for the Panthers.
The Panthers (15-2) will take on Mt. Lebanon, a 7-6 winner over Shady Side Academy, at 7:30 Friday at Fox Chapel for the WPSLA title.
Though Atkinson is in his first season as coach at Upper St. Clair, he was recently named WPSLA Coach of the Year.
"I've got nowhere to go but down from here," he said, laughing.
