Late collapse dooms Raiders

CENTER TWP, Beaver County — Seneca Valley had a two-point lead with 14 seconds left in regulation.

From that point on, everything that could go wrong for the Raiders did go wrong.

SV's defense gave up a two-point bucket to Center's Carl Farrow with five seconds left in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 45.

The Raiders' attempt at avoiding overtime saw the team unable to get the ball across mid-court.

The Trojans then manhandled Seneca Valley in the extra period, outscoring the Raiders 10-2 in a 55-47 decision in the final night of the C.J. Betters Tournament at the Community College of Beaver County Friday.

The Raiders committed three turnovers and shot just 1-of-8 from the field.

SV tied the score at 47 early in overtime, but Center netted the final eight points of the game, including a 3-pointer from Joe Duransky that gave his team a 50-47 lead with two minutes left.

"We had a few three- and four-point leads on them in the second half, but they would always make a basket to get right back in it," said Raiders coach Victor Giannotta. "We just couldn't put them away."

SV's offense struggled in the fourth quarter, making just 3-of-9 field goal attempts while turning the ball over four times.

"I thought, for most of the second half, we did a good job of taking them out of their offense," said Center coach Mark Jula. "(SV) was not getting many great shots off."

Also adding to SV's troubles was an 8-of-17 performance from the free throw line, including 2-of-7 in the second half.

Senior guard Dan Stanley came off the bench to lead the Raiders (5-6) with 18 points. He was the lone Raider to score in double digits and managed his team's only basket in overtime.

Stanley didn't start Thursday in a win over Monaca, yet he scored 17 points.

"He seems to play better coming off the bench," said Giannotta. "But he still ends up with the same amount of minutes.

"With him starting the game on the bench, it gives him a few minutes to watch the action and get into the game that way."

Unlike the Raiders, Center's offense was balanced.

Duransky (16 points), Ryan Thomas (14) and Farrow (13) all reached double figures.

"Duransky and Thomas have been carrying us all year," said Jula. "But Farrow has really stepped up in the last four or five games."

Center opened the game with a 6-2 run, but when Pat Heery completed a conventional three-point play with 50 seconds left in the quarter, the Raiders had their first lead at 13-12.

SV led 15-14 after one quarter, 24-22 at halftime and 36-33 after three quarters.

Seneca Valley ended up placing sixth out of eight teams in the tournament, while Center (8-3) finished fifth.
