Moniteau survives Nagy's 26 point-performance

CHERRY TWP — It appeared as though Frank Nagy was going to win the game almost single handedly.

But West Shamokin's one-man band ran out of tunes in the fourth quarter.

Entering the final period, Nagy had scored 24 points in a game tied at 36.

But Moniteau's boys basketball team held the senior guard to just two points on free throws in the last eight minutes as the Warriors prevailed 46-41 Monday night.

"We didn't execute well offensively late in the game," said West Shamokin coach Mike Nagy. "We rushed some shots and should have been more patient.

"We held (Moniteau) to 10 points in the final quarter," he added. "So I wouldn't have changed anything defensively. But we can't have Frank do everything."

The Wolves tallied just five points in the final quarter, including just one field goal.

"The fourth quarter seems to be our best quarter defensively," said Moniteau coach Randy Armagost. "But we knew about (Frank Nagy) coming in. He moves well with and without the ball."

The Wolves' first points of the final quarter — Nagy's two free throws with 4:12 remaining in the game — cut Moniteau's lead to 40-38.

But, aided by an 8-2 rebounding advantage in the period, Moniteau allowed just three more points the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

For the game, Moniteau earned a 27-11 edge on the boards.

"West Shamokin is a good, physical team," said Armagost. "But I had a group of kids out there in the final quarter who have played 150 games together. So they've been down this road before.

"They've won some and lost some," added Armagost. "But they know how to take care of the ball."

Matt Schandelmeier scored a team-high 16 points for the Warriors. Tyler Grossman tallied 13 and enters tonight's home game against West Forest needing 23 points to become the school's all-time leading scorer.

Ten of Schandelmeier's points came in the first quarter, helping Moniteau build a 16-9 lead after eight minutes of play.

The second quarter belonged to Nagy, who scored 16 points in the period, including 7-of-8 free throw attempts.

Trailing 28-27 at the break, the Wolves (10-5) looked to Nagy in the third quarter as well. He scored his team's first six points of the second half as West Shamokin built a 36-32 advantage with 4:00 left in the period.

But the Warriors (13-3) held the visitors scoreless for the rest of the quarter and, when Moniteau's Zack Thompson turned a steal into a two-point basket as the third quarter expired, the game was a stalemate at 36.

West Shamokin competes in the WPIAL's Section 1-AA.
