Too little, too late

Seneca Valley goalie Tom Comunale smothers a shot by McDowell's Richard Schutte during the Raiders' 3-1 loss at Blade Runners Tuesday night. Comunale had 28 saves for Seneca Valley.
Raiders let power-play opportunites slip away in loss

WARRENDALE — Seneca Valley finally got the power-play goal it was looking for.

But it was too little, too late.

Junior Matt Jarrett got the Raiders hockey team on the scoreboard with a goal with 32 seconds remaining in the game to cut McDowell's lead to 2-1.

SV then pulled goalie Tom Comunale and the Trojans tallied an empty-net goal for a 3-1 win Tuesday night at Warrendale BladeRunners.

The Raiders came up empty on five power plays in the game, including three consecutive chances in the second period.

McDowell was called for roughing, holding and high-sticking, giving the Raiders the numbers advantage starting at 12:14 of the second period.

And for nearly a minute, the second and third penalties overlapped, giving SV a two-man advantage.

But McDowell sophomore goalie Drew Ericson, who had 12 saves on the night, made his most impressive stops during that span to protect his team's 1-0 edge.

"We worked hard taking away their passing lanes," said McDowell coach Nels White of his team's penalty killing.

"And we got some great saves. That stretch in the second period was definitely the difference in the game."

For Raiders' coach Mike Schall, his team's execution in the offensive zone broke down at the worst possible time.

"During those power plays, we had no flow, no rhythm to our play," he said. "We were relying too much on individual efforts instead of playing as a team."

The Trojans (4-1-1) grabbed an early lead when Jim Martin's shot from in between the blue line and right faceoff circle deflected off Nick Disanti's shoulder and into the net for a 1-0 edge with 9:55 remaining in the first period.

Schall protested that the puck had hit Disanti's hand, which would have nullified the goal, but the score stood.

The Trojans' offense took a back seat for much of the second period as the team focused on killing the three consecutive penalties.

But with 5:33 left in the game, the Trojans finally got an insurance goal as Disanti scored for the second time on an assist from Ryan Presnar.

"Nick's a front-line player," said White. "He's a good goal scorer and he has good skating skills."

The Raiders' comeback hopes took a major blow when, with just 2:59 remaining, the team was hit with a high-sticking penalty.

The Raiders successfully killed the game, before Jarrett scored with assists going to Mike Rohm and Nick Jones.

McDowell's Andrew Kohler scored the empty-net goal with 13 seconds left to play.

Comunale ended his night with 28 saves, 12 of them coming in the third period.

"Tom's play was the reason the score was 2-1 late in the game," said Schall. "He smothered everything."

The Raiders (4-2) will travel to Castle Shannon's Ice Castle on Thursday to take on Baldwin.
