Few straight shooters
JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley girls basketball team's perfect start to the season hit a brick wall Thursday night.
And its offense took the brunt of the collision.
After scoring just 11 points by halftime, the Raiders (4-1, 0-1) managed 15 points in the third quarter to cut Pine-Richland's lead to 32-26.
But the final eight minutes saw SV shoot 12 percent (2-of-17) from the field in a 45-32 loss in the Section 3-AAAA opener for both teams.
"I thought we played scared tonight," said SV coach Kelly Mathews. "I couldn't find anyone who wanted to shoot the ball in the fourth quarter."
With the Rams up by four points, they received a huge 3-pointer from sophomore guard Katie Wise that made it 37-30 with 4:58 left to play. The Raiders' only other points came with less than a minute to play.
"I thought we were tired in that third quarter," said Rams coach Sherri McConnell. "We challenged the players to dig deep, and they showed a lot of toughness in the fourth quarter."
Sophomore Sydney Wilson played a big part in the Rams' 11-2 run in the first quarter.
The 6-foot-5 forward-center ate up the Raiders' inside game early, blocking five shots in the first quarter alone. She ended the game with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven blocks.
"Defensively, I'd say this is the best game she has played," said McConnell. "She has a lot of potential, and it's a nice luxury to have."
As good as the young front-court player may be, the Rams (4-1, 1-0) proved they can get the job done when Wilson isn't on the floor.
With 4:49 remaining in the first half and the Rams leading 16-7, Wilson left the game with two personal fouls.
She didn't return for the duration of the half, but Pine-Richland maintained its nine-point edge of 20-11 at the intermission.
"I've got to give credit to Christin Bridge," said McConnell of the reserve forward. "She did a nice job keeping us in the game."
Bridge didn't score points, but she played well defensively and came up with crucial rebounds.
"Having (Wilson) inside, obviously that's going to pose a problem for teams," said Mathews. "But I just think they're a very well-balanced team.
"They have well-defined roles for their players and they play within them."
Kelsey Spencer led the Raiders with 10 points, including six in the team's third-quarter run.
Wise and Tricia Adamczyk each added 10 points for the Rams.
