PITTSBURGH — Leave it to Molly Evans to be part of two school records on such a big stage.

For the second straight year, the Butler senior set the school standard in the 200 individual medley at the WPIAL Class AAA Swimming Championships.

And for the second straight year, she was a member of the Golden Tornado's 200 medley relay squad that set the record at the district meet.

On Thursday, she broke her own school record in the 200 IM by swimming the event in 2 minutes, 10.35 seconds at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool. The time was good for third place and an automatic trip to the PIAA meet later this month.

"That's the best part. I know I'm going to states," said Evans. "I don't have to wait and see if my time makes the cut."

"She did well today," said Butler coach Jeff Armstrong. "But our goal here is to get (to the state championships). Maybe in a couple of weeks she can knock some more time off that record."

Evans teamed with Ellen Crummy, Sarah Clouse and Brittany Vogel to set the school's new medley relay mark with an eighth-place finish of 1:53.20. It bettered the previous record by two-tenths of a second.

"We've come close to breaking the relay record all year," said Armstrong. "And I saw no reason why we couldn't break it here today."

Seneca Valley junior Rose Snyder clinched two state-meet spots in Thursday's first two events.

She swam a leg on the Raiders' 200 medley relay team, which placed third with a time of 1:50.73. She also placed second in the 200 freestyle with a finish of 1:53.20.

"She was unbelievable in the 200 today," said SV coach Tom Fletcher. "We needed her to be aggressive. and she was."

Snyder's teammates on the medley relay squad headed to states are Marissa Behning, Kelly Connolly and Elyse Dobrick.

SV also advanced its 200 freestyle quartet of Emily Wolfarth, Hollie Miller, Dobrick and Connolly with a third-place time of 1:39.03.

Dobrick had her eye on the 100 butterfly title, but settled for a third-place finish and a trip to states after a time of 58.55 seconds, which was .84 seconds behind Moon's Zina Grogg for the title.

Wolfarth's fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle will almost certainly get her to the state championships.

Her time of 1:55.08 will have to be one of the top 16 non-automatic times across the state, but she's confident of her chances.

"I think it will be good enough to get me to states," she said. "My goal was to make it to states in (the 200 freestyle). I've been to states in other events, but never this one."

"Emily swam out of her mind," said Fletcher. "It had to be one of the best races out of our girls today."

Connolly placed fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.64 and could be pulled into the state championships as well.

The WPIAL Class AAA Swimming Championships continue from 3 to 5:30 p.m. today. Events include the 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.
