SV sweeps to playoff win
The Seneca Valley volleyball team is one step closer to a WPIAL championship after the Raiders roared to a 25-13, 25-13, 26-24 win over Connellsville Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Class AAA playoffs.
"(The Raiders) played very well in the first and second game," said Seneca Valley coach Karen Martini. "In the third game, they let their guard down a little bit. But everyone on that court except for one was there last year. I think that experience helped."
Justine Carrow had 10 kills, Jen Boyd had eight kills and Jillian Galloway had seven kills for the Raiders, who will play Upper St. Clair in the semifinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
South Fayette 3, Freeport 2 — Sophomore Carly Bieranowski had 17 service points, 14 kills and two blocks, but the Yellowjackets' season came to an abrupt halt in a 25-21, 18-25, 25-27, 25-12, 7-15 loss in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs."It was a very emotional game that went back and forth, back and forth," said Freeport coach Tom Phillips.The turning point came in the third set when Freeport fell 27-25, Phillips said."Had we won that game, that would have put a lot of pressure on them," Phillips said.But Freeport responded with a convincing fourth-set win. It fell behind 7-2 in the final set, however, and never recovered.
<B>Derry 3, Mars 1</B> — Like Freeport, the Planets' season came to an abrupt close in a loss to Derry in the WPIAL Class AA quarterfinals.The Planets finished the season 17-3.<B>Redbank Valley 3, A-C Valley 0</B> — Erika Rothen had 14 service points and seven kills, but the 15th-seeded Falcons fell to the No. 2 seed in the District 9 tournament 25-17, 25-16, 25-19.A-C Valley finished the season 9-9.HockeyMatt Jarrett scored the game-winning goal in overtime as Seneca Valley opened its season with a 1-0 win over Norwin Tuesday night.
