PITTSBURGH — Colin South was a one-man wrecking crew for Quaker Valley against Mars in last year's Penguins Cup Class Achampionship game.

South scored all three goals in the Quakers' 3-1 victory.

When the Planets and Quaker Valley met in the semifinal round Wednesday night at Mellon Arena, Mars made sure South's game went south.

The senior winger and 41-goal scorer was limited to one shot on goal as the Planets recorded a dominant 4-0 victory.

"Basically, we didn't let him breathe," Mars junior Tyler Whiteford said.

Mars will play the winner of tonight's Serra Catholic-Bishop McCort semifinal for the Penguins Cup Class A title at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mellon Arena.

The Planets (22-1-0) enjoyed a 40-7 edge in shots on goal Wednesday, including the first 22 shots of the game. Quaker Valley (15-7-1) did not register a shot until halfway through the second period.

"Colin is a tremendous talent, but they had five players following him wherever he went,"Quaker Valley coach Kevin Quinn said. "That makes it kind of difficult to do anything."

Mars coach Steve Meyers said his team had to make sure South never got started.

"He's such a dangerous player and he was the guy we had to stop,"Meyers said. "We did a good job of bottling them up in their own end.

"Seven shots on goal — that's controlling play on the ice."

Mars won its 20th consecutive game, but it put 21 shots on goal before denting the scoreboard. Jake Robash's initial shot hit the post, but deflected right back to him in the slot. He made no mistake the second time.

Robash's goal — his 40th — occurred 4:54 into the second period.

"We were getting a little frustrated at our inability to score early,"Robash said. "You're always a little on edge until that first one goes in."

Despite the scoreless tie going into the second period, Meyers' confidence in his team never wavered.

"I never got anxious. (The Quakers) weren't getting shots. It felt like only a matter of time for us," he said.

The Planets made it 2-0 five minutes later when Whiteford scored his 17th of the season on a power play. Whiteford's wrist shot from the left of the net appeared to go right into goaltender Zack Taylor's pads, but somehow got through.

"I have no idea how that went in,"Whiteford said. "I thought he stopped it. It was a lucky goal, I guess, but that's why you keep throwing pucks at the net."

The Planets did plenty of that. Besides the four goals, they the post three times and Taylor made 36 saves.

"Zach's play was the only reason we stayed in this game at all,"Quinn admitted. "We're a young team this year and we had that deer-in-headlights look for the first two periods, standing around watching instead of playing.

"We seemed to have a little more bounce in the third period, but when we needed a bounce to go our way to get back in it, it didn't happen."

Instead, Mars put the game away with a second power-play goal. Stationed behind the Quaker Valley net, Andrew Santa passed to an open Derek Sitterly right in front of the goal.

Sitterly slid the puck past Taylor for his 16th goal of the year with 9:09 left in the game. Santa had three assists in the contest.

Goaltender Tyler Stepke recorded his seventh shutout of the campaign.

The Planets' final goal was a shorthanded empty-netter by defenseman Steven Tracy, who found the net from his own zone while clearing the puck on a Quakers power play.

"Mars was just too strong and powerful for us,"Quinn said. "We couldn't handle them. Then again, we weren't supposed to get this far."
