NEW CASTLE — Matching his career high in points against his team's biggest rival wasn't good enough for John Fitzpatrick, so the Seneca Valley senior gave it another shot on Friday.

The result was a career-best 28 points as the Raiders boys basketball team kept rolling with a 67-64 win at New Castle.

Fitzpatrick scored 18 in a win over North Allegheny Tuesday.

He tallied 13 in the first half against the Red Hurricanes (7-11, 3-6) and eight in the final period, when the home team stayed on the Raiders' heels.

"He's playing like he's all-section," SV coach Vic Giannotta said. "He plays at the top of our press, so if we get some steals, he has a chance to score a lot of points."

Fitzpatrick had been scoring a decent amount all season, but 46 points in his last two games came at a perfect time for the Raiders against two section opponents.

"I credit my teammates for my 28 points," said Fitzpatrick. "They played great tonight. I certainly wasn't out there doing it all by myself."

"(Fitzpatrick) stepped up tonight," said New Castle coach Mark Stanley. "He moves well and he's also physical."

New Castle led 45-43 entering the final period, but the score was tied at 57 with 3:15 left in the game.

Fitzpatrick went 1-of-2 from the free throw line for a 58-57 edge and the Raiders had the lead for good.

Fitzpatrick and Nate Herrmann each missed two free throws in the final 30 seconds with SV up 65-63, but the Hurricanes couldn't capitalize.

SV (14-5, 6-3) was 22-of-37 from the free throw line in the game and just 9-of-18 in the fourth quarter.

New Castle trailed 19-11 at the end of the first period, but, led by a trio of scorers, it fought back into the game and briefly into the lead.

Hurricanes forward Mike Andrews led the way with 18 points, and guards Nick Colella and Tyrone Steals were not far behind with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Steals became the master of the putback in the third quarter when he scored four field goals — three off of rebounds — and Andrews managed to get open for several wide open layups during the game.

"We had a few defensive lapses," said Giannotta. "But you've got to give all the credit in the world to Coach Stanley and those guys. They are a much-improved team."

Dan Rohm, SV's 3-point shooting specialist, hit four in the game, including three early in the fourth quarter.

Notes: SV's win gives the team 14 on the season, tying the program record. ... Both teams pulled down 28 rebounds.
