Shot fired in apartment leads to arrest

A New Castle man allegedly shot a gun inside a Slippery Rock Township apartment.

Anthony D. Retone, 20, of New Castle, was arrested by Slippery Rock police early Sunday morning in connection to felony charges of illegally owning a gun, carrying a gun without a license and having a gun with an altered serial number.

Retone was also charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment.

The charges were filed Sunday by state police, who conducted the investigation.

According to charging documents, Retone had a .45-caliber handgun in his pocket when he entered the living room of a residence at the Grove Apartments.

“The defendant revealed and manipulated the pistol, causing the gun to be fired,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

According to police Monday, Retone was showing people he had the gun when it fired into the ground.

Police said there were five people other than Retone in the apartment, and they were all in the living room at the time the gun went off.

“A bullet hole in the floor and a bullet fragment was observed at the scene,” police said.

The documents said a security guard told police Retone was not supposed to be at the complex. He told police that, after the shot, Retone fled on foot and jumped a fence that surrounds the complex.

Police on Monday said investigators traced Retone's steps near the fence and found the gun, which had been thrown into a nearby field.

Documents said when police looked at the gun closer, they saw that the serial number had been altered.

Retone's court docket was not immediately available, but his preliminary hearing will take place before District Judge William O'Donnell.

Although the Grove Apartments are advertised as student housing, they are not affiliated with the university. According to university officials, Retone has never been enrolled at the college.
