MINNEAPOLIS — US Airways is joining other airlines with big East Coast operations that want exemptions from new rules punishing long tarmac delays.

Other big airlines have asked for exemptions for the three New York-area airports. In a new filing, US Airways wants to add Philadelphia International Airport to the list. Beginning April 29, flights that sit more than three hours on the tarmac will be subject to fines that could add up to millions of dollars for a single plane, if the Transportation Department invokes the maximum penalty.

Airlines are especially worried about the New York airports. The main runway at New York's John F. Kennedy International closed for four months on March 1, and that's expected to snarl air traffic.

JetBlue and Delta Air Lines have asked for exemptions from the delay rule at JFK, followed by American Airlines.

MINNEAPOLIS — The maker of Cheerios cereal and Yoplait yogurt says its fiscal third-quarter profit climbed on lower commodity costs and rising sales of snacks, cereal and other food items. General Mills also lifted its 2010 adjusted earnings outlook, but the forecast was shy of Wall Street's expectations.Net income rose 15 percent to $332.5 million, or 96 cents per share. General Mills, based in Minneapolis, has been one of the stronger food makers in the weak economy because of sales gains from consumers looking for cheap meals.

LONDON — Striking British Airways cabin crews may soon get the stay-at-home blues after the airline permanently cut off their access to free and discounted travel on its routes.Airline officials say they have the right to eliminate the travel perks because it is not protected by any contractual agreement.The decision was announced today, two days after last weekend's strike and ahead of a second work stoppage, scheduled to begin Saturday.BA chief executive officer Willie Walsh had warned potential strikers they would lose their travel perks if they went ahead with the job action, which caused major disruption. Crews are striking over pay and work conditions.
