Silver Screen Film about East Brady native, former NFL quarterback Jim Kelly in the works

East Brady native and former Buffalo Bills' quarterback Jim Kelly runs through a tunnel of students at Karns City High School in this file photo from 2013. There's a movie in the works about Kelly, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002, and his family that will detail the trials and tribulations of his life, including his recent battle with oral cancer.

CANTON, Ohio — From humble beginnings in a small Western Pennsylvania town.

To a big-time college football program and then to an upstart league where he shattered passing records.

Then, to the big stage of the NFL, enduring four consecutive Super Bowl losses while also praying for a son stricken with a rare genetic disease.

From the highs of a Pro Football Hall of Fame induction to the lows of two battles with oral cancer.

All the while holding on to his faith with a loving wife and two daughters by his side.

Sounds like a movie script.

Soon it will be.

The story of East Brady native Jim Kelly and his family may be on the big screen within the next two years.

The yet untitled project has been green-lit and Kelly and the Pro Football Hall of Fame is putting together the script.

“I'm excited for it from the standpoint of being able to hopefully make a difference for other people,” Kelly told the Buffalo News Thursday at the Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame president David Baker said the movie will focus on the Kelly family's strong faith that helped them weather the storm of the Super Bowl losses, the rare Krabbe disease that took the life of their son, Hunter, at the age of 8, Jim Kelly's relationship with his wife, Jill, and Jim's cancer fight.

“We are honored to work with Jim and Jill to tell their incredible life story and their journey of faith,” Baker said in a statement. “We have known the Kellys for many years in support of their efforts to tell their life story with integrity. We have prayed with them that they would be comfortable with their decision, and were honored to be a part of this movie.”

The script is nearly complete, Kelly told the Buffalo News.

The film is likely to hit on major events:

Like Kelly's career at the University of Miami — the first in a line of quarterbacks that helped make the Hurricanes program known as “Quarterback U.”

Like his decision to spurn the Buffalo Bills for the Houston Gamblers of the USFL and then head back to the Bills to launch his Hall of Fame career.

Like the four Super Bowl losses.

Like his marriage struggles and the loss of his son.

And, of course, his cancer.

But the movie will also touch on aspects of the Kellys' life that haven't been widely discussed before, Jill Kelly told the Buffalo News.

“It's interesting,” Jill said. “You think you've shared it all, but this is totally different. Even in the process where we are right now, so much that we've never shared before is literally being birthed.”
