Shick

Darrell Eugene “Darl” Shick, 81, of Rimersburg died at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Clarview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, after an illness.

Born in Rimersburg, March 14, 1926, he was the son of Roll Shick, who died in 1961 and Icie Marie Hawk Shick, who died in 1943.

He attended schools in Toby Township, Baker, Watson and Carwick, and graduated from eighth grade with an honorary diploma. He also attended Union High School and graduated in 1944.

Upon graduation, he entered the Army, served 18 months in Germany and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of staff sergeant.

He then graduated from Clarion State College, now Clarion University, in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He was awarded a master’s degree from Westminster College in 1951 in psychology and guidance and from Indiana (Pa.) University in 1967 in geography.

Mr. Shick served the Union School District as elementary principal from 1964 until retiring in 1990. In 1991, he was presented with a plaque from the Union School Board of Education for his leadership and service.

He was a member of the Shearer Shick American Legion Post 454 for more than 50 years and served as adjutant of the post for 38 years. He also was a member of the board of governors of the Rimersburg Medical Center since 1964.

Surviving are a brother, Donald Shick and his wife, Leona, of Rimersburg; a stepsister, Roberta Baker Shick and her husband, Jack, of Henderson, Texas; a stepbrother, Robert Baker and his wife, Carrie, of Warren, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death his stepmother, Alma Shaffer Baker Shick, in 1989; three sisters, Helen Shick Neal in 1970, Ruby Shick McElhaney in 2000 and Dorothy Fowler in 2001; and a stepbrother, Roy Donald Baker in 1994.

SHICK — Friends of Darrell Eugene “Darl” Shick, who died Friday, May 11, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home, 758 Main St., Rimersburg. Visitation also will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rimersburg United Methodist Church, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Brock Beveridge officiating. Burial will follow at the Rimersburg Cemetery with full military honors accorded by members of the Rimersburg VFW and American Legion Ceremonial Squad.
