Slippery Rock University football trounces Millersville 70-10
Slippery Rock University’s offense has been unstoppable.
Quite literally.
The Rock scored touchdowns on its first 10 possessions Saturday in a 70-10 football rout at Millersville University. The week before, SRU scored on seven consecutive possessions before taking a knee to run the clock out on a win at East Stroudsburg.
“Wow … I didn’t realize that was going on,” SRU coach Shawn Lutz said of the streak.
Running back JayJay Jordan scored four touchdowns in the first half alone and tied a school record by finding the end zone five times on the day. He rushed for 124 yards despite having an 80-yard scoring run wiped out by a holding penalty.
Jordan, a senior, has scored a touchdown in nine straight games, dating back to last season. His 100-yard rushing effort was his ninth in SRU’s last 13 games.
DaOne Owens completed 21 of 26 passes for 325 passing yards and four touchdowns. He had TD tosses to Jordan and wide receivers Ethan Trettel and Hamilton Gates in the first half alone.
Trettel, a Butler graduate, got the scoring started with an 11-yard catch for his first collegiate touchdown.
SRU (3-0) racked up 703 yards offensively on 80 plays. The Rock is averaging 58 points per game so far this season.
Owens put the ball into the hands of eight different receivers Saturday despite starting wideout Reggie Fleurima missing the game due to injury.
“DaOne is doing a good job of getting everyone involved,” Lutz said. “We’re in a good place right now. This was the first time we’ve put together a complete game. We needed something like this.”
SRU forced one turnover defensively — Teddy Gregory Jr. forcing a fumble that Carmen Metcalfe recovered in the first half — and limited the Marauders to 231 yards of total offense, only 19 rushing.
Millersville was held below 200 yards on the day before Eddie Corkery found Jayden Walters for a 60-yard touchdown strike late in the fourth quarter. SRU’s third-team unit was on the field at the time.
The Rock did commit eight penalties for 80 yards and had three touchdowns called back by penalties. The team wound up scoring TDs on those possessions regardless.
“We had no personal foul penalties today after having four of those last week, so that’s encouraging,” Lutz said. “Still, we can’t take touchdowns off the board like that.
“We still have things we have to clean up. Just keep getting better.”
SRU is now 22-4-1 all-time against Millersville and has defeated the Marauders 12 straight times.
SRU opens PSAC West play at noon Sept. 26 at California (Pa.). The Vulcans are 2-1, dropping a 28-7 decision to Shepherd on Saturday.
