Rock rolls!
WEST CHESTER — Simply put, The Rock is rolling.
Dante Nania threw for 304 yards and five touchdowns Saturday in being named the game's Most Outstanding Player as SRU cruised to a 61-12 football victory in the PSAC Championship Game at John A. Farrell Stadium.
SRU became the first team since the state title game was reinstated in 2008 to win the crown in consecutive years and is the first road team to claim the championship.
“I told our guys during the pre-game meal that the PSAC trophy has never been on a bus ride,” Rock coach George Mihalik said. “Let's take it on a ride back to The Rock.”
The 61 points and 49-point margin of victory are both PSAC championship game records. SRU (10-1) reached double-digit wins for the first time since 1999. SRU has outscored its last three opponents by a 178-35 margin.
“I do think we're peaking at the right time of year,” Nania said. “Nothing is slowing down this train.”
SRU moved up to the No. 2 ranking in Super Region One and will host No. 7 seed Virginia Union (8-2) at noon Saturday in a first-round NCAA Division II playoff game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. It will mark The Rock's first home playoff game since 1999.
The Rock made quick work of the host Rams (7-4) in the conference title game. After failing to score on its first possession for the first time in six games, SRU found the end zone on each of its next four possessions and had a 35-6 lead at halftime.
West Chester entered the game allowing an average of 309 yards per contest. SRU had 367 in the first half alone and tallied 557 for the game.
Nania threw three of his TD passes in the first half — 41 yards to Marcus Carter and Taishan Tucker, 11 yards to Shamar Greene. Greene had 21 carries for 178 yards and a touchdown to lead the running game.
Nania added TD tosses of 39 and 19 yards to Cornelius Raye and Jaimire Dutrieuille, respectively, in the second half.
“Those five guys up front had a great performance in giving me time to throw,” Nania said. “And our running game always helps set up the pass.
“I decided to join what was already a great team this year. All I wanted was to do my part and help us win and get better.”
Defensively, The Rock came up with three takeaways. Deonte Flemings and Erik Johnson had interceptions and Johnny Davis returned a fumble 57 yards for the final score of the game.
Linebacker Teven Williams had nine solo tackles to pace SRU. Kyle Hall, a freshman, had seven stops. Williams and Nania were named PSAC Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week for their efforts Saturday.
“Teven just had an outstanding game,” Mihalik said. “Some of those hits he was laying out ... you could hear the people going 'oooh' in the stands.
“We removed any doubt in this game at the start of the third quarter. Our defense forced a three-and-out and our offense drove down and scored. That's good team football and that's what we played all day.”
Julian Durden rushed for two touchdowns for SRU, giving him 19 on the season. He is two short of tying LaMonte Coleman's single-season Rock record.
Notes: Seven of The Rock wins this year are against teams above .500. Five are over teams with at least seven wins. ... West Chester was held to 52 yards rushing. ... Mihalik now has 195 wins as head coach and Saturday marked SRU's 1,000th football game all-time. ... Greene has 3,371 career rushing yards, fourth on SRU's all-time list. ... Dutrieuille became the sixth player in Rock history to record 2,000 receiving yards.
