Beimel not ready for Bucs' 2011 opener

BRADENTON, Fla. — Pittsburgh left-hander Joe Beimel wont’ be ready for opening day, leaving the Pirates without their main offseason bullpen acquisition.

Beimel has been hampered much of spring training by injuries to his forearm and elbow. The 33-year-old is healthy and has resumed throwing off a mound, but said Friday that he needs time to get into game shape.

“I started looking at the calendar and realized it was going to be pretty hard to do,” Beimel said. “I’m not going to go out there if all my stuff isn’t working. I don’t want to have to rush to get ready for a date that doesn’t really mean anything. It is opening day, but I’m looking to be healthy for the entire season. I think this will work out to be best for myself and for the team.”

Beimel will throw a bullpen session Sunday.
