BUTLER TWP — The township commissioners voted Monday to change the zoning of Deshon Woods, the VA Butler Healthcare campus and the U.S. Army Reserve Center, all on Route 68.

The zoning change is to an institutional overlay, which allows the construction of facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, group homes, independent and assisted living centers, professional offices, and federal, state, county or municipal buildings.

In addition to correcting a 2006 oversight that allowed the properties to remain zoned for single-family homes, R-1, the township hopes the VA will establish a new health center on the Deshon Woods property under the new zoning ordinance.

The VA is looking for a developer to build an outpatient facility that could be leased to the VA.

The township has put the 15.9 acres of Deshon Woods up for sale for that purpose.

The township bought the property, which was originally part of the VA campus, from the federal government in the 1950s with the stipulation that it remain undeveloped for 20 years.

Neither the commissioners nor residents had comments before the vote on the zoning change.
