HARRISBURG — The Emlenton water system and the Butler Area Sewer Authority both have been awarded state money for system upgrades.

Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, also known as PENNVEST, approved the following projects:

• Aqua Pennsylvania, Emlenton, Venango County — $3.1 million grant to improve an aging water system with numerous violations, including cryptosporidium in finished water. The project includes constructing a 288,000-gallon-per-day treatment plant, modifications to the existing reservoir and additional pumping to serve high- and low-pressure areas.

• Butler Area Sewer Authority, Butler Township — $13 million loan to improve the sewer system, which becomes overloaded in wet weather, discharging raw sewage into public areas. The project includes the construction of five surge tanks with a capacity of 16 million gallons, three new pumping stations and 5,200 feet of collection piping.

State Sen. Mary Jo White, R-21st, announced the awards Tuesday.
