Planets back in orbit with victory

Mars avoids turnovers vs. Lions

NEWBRIGHTON — Forget Videogate.

Mars coach Scott Heinauer knew the real problem behind last week's 41-35 loss to Shenango and it's something he wanted to fix right away.

Consider the problem solved.

After a five-turnover performance last week, including three fumbles by running back Billy Bair, the Planets reversed their fortunes against NewBrighton Friday.

Bair rushed for 216 yards, scored four touchdowns and the Planets didn't commit a turnover in a 35-0 nonconference rout of the Lions at Oak Hill Stadium.

"When you make turnovers like we did last week, that's what happens," said Heinauer. "No question, we can run the ball. Those five turnovers killed us. We fumbled the ball and didn't play well."

Friday was an about-face with the defense picking off four Brandon Mosely passes. The first two came on the Lions' first two possessions, which led to a pair of Mars scores.

Carroll Smith grabbed the first interception on the first play of the game, which set up a seven-play, 52-yard drive capped by a Josh Keil 27-yard scoring strike from D.J. Cannon on a fourth-and-10 play. The drive also saw Mars (3-1) convert on a third-and-8 with a 22-yard hookup to Matt Kennedy.

Three plays into the Lions' ensuing drive, Cannon picked off Mosely and set up Mars at the NB 18. Two plays later, Bair scored untouched from 16 yards out.

On Mars' next possession, Bair scored from 46 yards out on the first play from scrimmage to open a 21-0 lead with 3:47 left in the opening frame.

For those keeping track: three touchdowns in four offensive plays.

"Mars outplayed us. They have a really good football team," said Lions coach Joe Greco. "They were more physical. We never got anything established. We didn't stop them in the first half. We dug ourselves a big hole.

"I expected us to be more physical and compete harder. It didn't happen. I didn't see this coming," Greco added.

Mars made it 28-0 when Bair scored on a 23-yarder with 6:21 remaining before halftime.

New Brighton (2-2) did have a pair of eight-play drives before the half, but both fizzled, the latter because of another interception from Cannon with one minute remaining.

"The thing is, New Brighton has a good football team," said Heinauer. "They made mistakes early, and, obviously, our kids did a good job taking advantage of that."

New Brighton totaled just 29 yards at halftime and 111 for the game.

"Our defense played great," said Heinauer. "The kids were proud of the shutout. They worked hard to get it.

"Obviously, I'm happy. That's the kind of game we can play. A mistake-free game," Heinauer added.

Bair closed out the scoring in the third quarter when he scored on a 42-yard run, which invoked the mercy rule clock.

Notes: Ryan Schroth was perfect on all five extra-point attempts. ... The Lions finished the game with 24 yards rushing on 30 carries; Mars had 285 yards on 28 carries. ... The Lions ran 23 offensive plays in the first quarter, Mars had 20.
