Warriors overcome feisty Union
RIMERSBURG — There is an adage in professional football that on any given Sunday, any team can win.
It was almost proven true in the KSAC on Friday night as Union held Moniteau to 14 first-half points before succumbing to the Warriors 42-3.
"This is the best Union football team I have seen here in years," said Moniteau coach Steve Wilson. "They have some good athletes, they're strong, they're quick."
"This is a very good football team."
The game started slowly as both teams traded punts on their opening drives.
Moniteau took advantage on the subsequent possession as Adam Cousins plowed through the middle of the Union defense for a 2-yard touchdown run.
Cousins gave the Warriors good field position for the scoring drive by returning the Union punt 14 yards to the Golden Knights 38-yard line.
Then on the first play from scrimmage, he broke through the left side of the Union line for 34 yards before being tackled at the Union 4-yard line.
"(Cousins) is a special athlete," said Wilson. "He's just one of those kids that should be stopped for a four- or five-yard gain, but he will get a few more yards with twists and spins."
Cousins, the 5-6, 163-pound senior, had 120 yards on 13 carries.
The Warriors' next possession was an aerial exhibition as quarterback Tyler Armagost hit Adam Pry with a 30-yard strike to the Union 4.
On the next play, Armagost found Pry on a quick slant in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown pass that gave Moniteau a 14-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Armagost finished the game with 107 yards passing on seven completions.
"Tyler is one of the nicest kids who will do anything you ask him to do, and he keeps delivering," said Wilson.
Union answered on its next possession, driving to the Moniteau 11-yard line on 11 plays. However, the drive stalled and the Knights had to settle for an Aaron Paulden 28-yard field goal.
Moniteau tried to respond on its next possession, but Armagost fumbled on a 33-yard scramble as he was about to cross the goal-line, and Union's Trent Switzer recovered in the end zone for a touchback.
Cousins added another rushing touchdown to begin the second half when he slashed 24 yards to the end zone to give Moniteau a 21-3 advantage.
Warriors tight end Aaron Randall hauled in a 28-yard pass from Armagost and rumbled into the end zone.
Randall was an important component in the Moniteau offense as he caught three balls for 59 yards.
A bright spot for Union was the running and catching of Nate Boltz and the passing of Zach Himes.
Boltz had 103 yards of total offense and Himes threw for 74 yards.
Moniteau was just too deep and too strong for the Knights in the second half.
"It's tough to play a team that dresses 53 and we only dress 23," said Union coach Tom Kidder. "(Wilson) has 30 players that see the field and we have 12 or 13."
"They just tired us out."
