Sabers slash Freeport
FORD CITY—After Freeport running back Kevin Turner fumbled on the second play of the second half Friday, numerous Yellowjackets walked to the sideline with their heads down.
Tha play told the story of Freeport's night.
Needing a win to keep its postseason hopes alive, Freeport (5-4, 4-4) never was in the game as Ford City raced to a 53-0 win that clinched the Sabers' conference title.
"We just got beat on both sides of the ball," Freeport coach Bill Dillen said. "There's really nothing more to say."
Ford City running back Derek Bush, who has 23 rushing touchdowns this year, did most of the damage. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark with 149 yards on 17 carries.
"I just think (our) line physically took control up front," said Ford City coach John Bartolovic. "Derek's a good runner, but I'd give the O-line the credit tonight."
Bush, who also caught a 33-yard pass, did his job despite a steady rain that turned the middle of the field into mud.
The conditions didn't bother the Sabers (8-1, 8-0), who took immediate control.
Bush ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run 50 seconds into the game, and fullback Sean Kriley added a 9-yard run four minutes later.
Bush and Kriley combined on 12 and 39-yard runs, respectively, to stake the Sabers to a 28-0 lead after the first quarter.
The opportunistic Sabers, who added 19 points in the second quarter to take a 47-0 lead at the break, took advantage of eight Freeport turnovers. The Yellowjackets lost four fumbles, and quarterback Brian Zimmerman, who went 0-for-8, tossed four interceptions.
"I'm not going to use (the weather) as an excuse," Dillen said. "They're a good football team and just beat us on both sides of the ball."
