Fatal accident involved Butler County drivers
RICHLAND TWP — Two Butler County residents were involved in the Route 8 accident Monday night in which a pedestrian was killed.
Police said April Powell, 32, of West Deer, was walking across the 5800 block of Route 8, near the road's Bakerstown Road overpass, when she was struck by two vehicles that were traveling north on the road, which in that area is a four lane highway.
Northern Regional Police chiefs Bob Amann said Tuesday that his department is still trying to reconstruct the accident, but have so far determined that Powell was crossing the road from the southbound lanes, and was struck first by a Jeep driven by Jan Smith, 65, of Butler. Smith's Jeep was traveling north in the road's right-hand lane, Amann said. Powell was then struck a second time in the road's left hand northbound lane by a Toyota van driven by Laura Felice, 52, of Mars. Amann said both drivers stopped at the scene, thought it wasn't immediately clear who called police to report the accident.
Powell was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy by the Allegheny County medical examiner's office was scheduled for Tuesday.
Amann said investigators don't yet know why Powell was walking across the road in an area he called dangerous for pedestrians.
“It's an extremely dark area of Route 8,” Amann said. “This stretch of highway is not lit by any type of streetlights.”
