Lightning forces makeup date with North Catholic girls soccer leading Freeport in rematch of WPIAL quarterfinals
BUFFALO TWP — North Catholic and Freeport girls soccer met three times last season, including a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal won by the Yellowjackets in overtime.
The teams will have to wait to receive a result from their first clash of 2026.
The Trojanettes moved ahead 2-1 in Wednesday’s Section 2-2A meeting on Megan Heinbach’s goal in the 27th minute. Less than two minutes later, play was stopped due to lightning visible from Freeport Stadium with 11:40 left in the first half. Twenty minutes later, the remainder of the game was postponed and will resume at a time and date to be determined.
Freeport, the defending WPIAL champion, took an early lead when Ella McConville’s through ball led teammate Cecelia Schlegel behind North’s defense and the latter’s shot sailed past goalie Braelyn Dawson.
Nina Lang’s goal on a free kick from 45 yards in the 15th minute pulled the Trojanettes even.
Dawson and Freeport goalie Sophia Crawford made leaping saves in the first half.
Both teams will be in action Monday. North (1-0-1, 1-0-1) hosts Karns City and Freeport (3-1, 1-0) travels to Deer Lakes.
