Union workers at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center are voting today on a contract offer from Butler County.

Bill O’Donnell, chief county clerk, said the nursing center’s roughly 200 workers would be offered what other units were given.

“We would want it to be consistent with the downtown units,” he said.

Four bargaining units that cover about 300 workers at the government center and courthouse this month approved four-year pacts with average 3 percent raises each year.

Those agreements, which run from 2011 through 2014, also provide for the possibility that the county would increase employees’ health care contributions.

For the first two years, workers pay a portion of their benefits via a 1.5 percent paycheck deduction.

If premiums exceed 10 percent in one year or 20 percent cumulatively, the county might increase the employee contribution and deductibles.

County Commissioner Dale Pinkerton, board chairman, said he is optimistic the Sunnyview workers will accept the offer.

“We’re just hoping and praying it goes through,” he said.

The commissioners on Wednesday approved a two-year contract covering six assistant district attorneys and four public defenders.

The attorneys, who are represented by United Steelworkers, will receive 3 percent wage hikes each year and continue paying a 1.5 percent contribution toward their health care costs.

The county still is negotiating with prison correction officers and county detectives.
