Clara Brice Thoman, 90, of Alexandria, Va., died April 4.

Born Dec. 25, 1916, in Platte Clove, N.Y., she was a daughter of Walter J. and Elizabeth Ostrander Brice.

She grew up in Rye, N.Y., graduated as valedictorian of Rye High School in 1934 and received a full scholarship to Vassar College, where she graduated in 1938 with highest honors and a degree in Latin. She received her master's degree from Bryn Mawr College as a Latin Fellow in 1938.

She taught at the Dalton School in New York, N.Y., prior to moving to Juniata College in Huntington, Pa., in 1941, where she met and married Raymond H. Thoman.

They moved to Western Pennsylvania and she taught at Grove City and Westminster colleges, Sharpsville High School and Youngstown University. She finished her career at Slippery Rock University, where she taught from 1968 to 1983 and was chairman of the English department for a time.

From 1983 to 1998, the couple lived at Lake of the Woods, Va., and then moved to York, Pa. After her husband's death in August 2006, she moved to Alexandria.

She also had been active in the Girl Scouts and the PTA and taught informal ancient Greek classes.

Mrs. Thoman also had been active in church activities and belonged to Methodist churches in Sharon, Grove City and Slippery Rock and the Lake of the Woods multi-denominational church.

Surviving are a daughter, Ruth "Becky" Lindberg of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Raymond B. Thoman of Alexandria, Va., and Timothy C. Thoman of Amissville, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Two children, Walter H. Thoman and Lucinda A. Fuerle, preceded her in death.
