NEW BETHLEHEM — There aren't many quarterbacks who can tear apart a defense with both their arm and their legs.

Redbank Valley quarterback Jake Smith can be added to that short list.

Smith had 227 total yards, rushed for two scores and passed for two more as Redbank Valley cruised past Union 48-6 on Friday night.

Redbank Valley got on the scoreboard first with 5:51 to go in the first quarter when Smith ran a quarterback keeper for a 1-yard score.

A key play on the Bulldogs' scoring drive was a 27-yard pass from Smith to Nash Rupp that set them up at the Union 1-yard line.

The Golden Knights attempted to answer on the ensuing drive by driving 36 yards on five plays to the Redbank Valley 20.

However, the drive stalled when a Redbank's Patrick Goheen picked off a Matt Gagliano pass in the end zone.

"We threw an interception, started shooting ourselves in the foot," said Union coach Tom Kidder. "We were playing on momentum."

Redbank closed out the opening quarter on the ensuing drive when Smith threw a 17-yard scoring strike to Craig Hibell that gave the Bulldogs a 13-0 lead.

Hibell was Redbank Valley's leading receiver with four catches for 62 yards.

It took the Bulldogs one play to add to their lead when Rupp scored on a 45-yard end-around.

The touchdown run gave Redbank Valley a comfortable 20-0 lead.

A 47-yard punt return by Rupp set up the Bulldogs at the Union 28-yard line.

Six plays later, Smith slashed his way into the end zone from the 3.

Redbank Valley had 259 total yards in the first half.

The Golden Knights did manage to avoid the shutout when Zach Traister broke through the Redbank Valley defense for a 75-yard touchdown run.

Traister was Union's top ground gainer with 91 yards.

The Golden Knights came into the game with heavy hearts after former star player Colton Davis was killed in a motorcycle accident the previous evening.

Davis, 19, is the son of current Union boys basketball coach Karen Davis.

"The kids were a little bit drained with Colton passing away, a lot of the kids were at the hospital last night and I didn't know how the kids were going to react to that," said Kidder. "We played with a little adrenaline at the beginning of the game, but after that it wore us down."

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in the KSAC.

"We just have to keep improving," said Redbank Valley coach Ed Wasilowski. "We can't keep going the way we're going the rest of the year."
