Warriors struggling
It's never a good sign when the coach uses words like “fractured” when talking about his team.
But that was just the kind of vocabulary Moniteau baseball coach Ross Martin used after the Warriors' latest frustrating loss, this one 9-2 to Keystone at Pullman Park Thursday afternoon.
“We have no team concept whatsoever,” Martin said. “And that's very disappointing and frustrating at this point in the year. We have too many egos and too many guys who think they are owed something at this level.”
Moniteau (2-7) had an opportunity to improve its standing in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference with a win over Keystone (2-6), which was struggling.
But Warriors' starter Trent Young was shaky, giving up two runs in the first inning and getting in trouble in the third inning when Martin pulled him after a leadoff single and then a four-pitch walk.
Young did strike out four in his short outing.
“He was laboring the whole time,” Martin said. “This was a big game and we needed a big spurt.”
Freshman Derek Boben relieved Young and pitched well. Keystone did score three runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead, but only one was earned.
Moniteau got a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jake McBride was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Warriors, though, managed just four singles off of Keystone starting pitcher Matt Hurst.
“We haven't hit the ball all year,” Martin said. “That's a major problem.”
Boben was effective until the seventh when he tired. The Panthers scored four runs in the frame. Only two of those runs were earned.
“Until the last inning there, he pitched well,” Martin said. “All in all, he did well. If we make some defensive plays behind him, it's a different story.”
Moniteau isn't done, however. The Warriors still have seven games remaining.
“We have a lot of season left,” Martin said. “But we gave up on a big opportunity today.”
