GOING FOR THE GUSTO
Thirteen-year-old Bill Beck of New Castle Street lets go a high arched toss in the softball throw of the Special Olympics competition held at Butler High School's field in April 1974, one of the warmest days of the season. Bill's toss of 56.7 feet was not enough to beat out the winners in the 12- to 13-year-old class, Jody Oesterling and Robert Badger. The area competition was to follow on May 11 on the campus of Slippery Rock State College, now Slippery Rock University.
