QB uses legs to beat Raiders
BALDWIN — Baldwin quarterback Jeff Joyce attempted only one pass in Friday's nonconference game against Seneca Valley.
It's a wonder he found the time to do even that.
Joyce rushed for 333 yards on 10 carries and four touchdowns, and added a punt return for another score, as the Highlanders rolled to a 63-28 football victory over the Raiders.
In all, Baldwin (2-2) totaled 592 yards of offense — all coming on the ground.
Joyce ran the flex bone — a.k.a. the triple option — to perfection, something he hadn't done in the first three games.
"We haven't had that from him," said first-year Baldwin coach Dan Pallante. "He hasn't had a lot of confidence.
"It was more of a spread offense here last year. Jeff's kind of getting used to (the new scheme)," he added.
"We knew Baldwin was good and knew their offense was hard to stop," said Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle. "It's a matter of discipline and we didn't play assignments to the football."
Joyce took a punt from the Raiders' opening possession and scored from 63 yards out to get the Highlanders going.
The Raiders (2-2) answered with a 14-play, 66-yard drive, culminated by a 1-yard keeper by quarterback C.J. Brown.
But Baldwin scored on its next three possessions — runs by Matt Perella, Joyce and Quinn Hood — to open a 28-7 lead with 9:35 left before halftime.
Seneca Valley would get its offense going as well, scoring three touchdowns before the break — Bill Burns had an 8-yard run and Shaine Patsilevas and Evan Hetzel caught 65 and 13-yard scoring passes from Brown — but Baldwin sandwiched two scores in between that span to take a 42-28 score into halftime.
When Hood scored on a 3-yard run 1:37 into the third quarter, the Highlanders retook a three-touchdown lead and cruised to the win.
Joyce added scoring runs of 35 and 85 yards before the mercy rule went into effect with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Brown finished the game with 170 yards on 10-of-23 passing, but he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.
"He's a nice quarterback," said Pallante. "I didn't sleep a whole lot. We tried our hardest to put pressure on him, but he showed glimpses of how talented he is."
Raiders running back James Daniels sat out the game because of a shoulder injury suffered in last week's matchup with Penn-Trafford.
Against Baldwin, linebacker Derek Peluso (knee) and leading receiver Matt Plautz (sternum) both left the game due to injuries and did not return.
"It's all part of the game," said Butschle. It hurts when you lose two good players.
"As hard as it is to forget this game, that's what we have to do."
