JACKSON TWP — Bethel Park football coach Jeff Metheny was hoping for a good game out of his quarterback.

He got a great one instead.

Junior Erik Olson completed 10 of 12 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns as the Black Hawks rolled to a 31-20 WPIAL Quad A first-round playoff win Friday over host Seneca Valley.

Olson now has 12 touchdowns and one interception on the season.

"Boy, did he come through for us tonight," said Metheny. "He started just one game last year, and to have the season he's had, it's great."

Olson did most of his damage in the first half, completing his first six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

But it was his scoring pass to John Schademan right before halftime that was a back-breaker for the Raiders.

With Bethel Park (7-3) leading 14-7, the Black Hawks intercepted SV quarterback C.J. Brown and began a drive on their own 34-yard line with 4:23 left in the second quarter.

Bethel Park turned to its running game on eight of its next 11 plays. But with the ball on SV's 13 and facing a third and 9, Olson took a three-step drop and lofted the ball to the back right corner of the end zone.

Schademan had two steps on SV defensive back Dustin Anewalt, was fully extended when he caught the ball and kept one foot on the ground for a highlight-reel catch and a 21-7 lead eight seconds before halftime.

"That score changed how we were thinking on offense," said SV coach Ron Butschle. "Our game plan was to run the ball more than we did.

"If you're down by one score, you can stick to your game plan. But down two scores, we abandoned our running game in the second half."

Bethel Park pushed its lead to 31-7 early in the fourth quarter before a spirited comeback made things a bit uneasy on the Black Hawks' sideline.

Brown ran for a 9-yard touchdown that made it 31-13 with 6:23 left in the game.

After forcing a Bethel Park punt, the Raiders drove 95 yards in 13 plays, with Matt Plautz catching a 17-yard pass from Brown.

Ryan Zipf's extra point made it 31-20 with 1:54 left.

The Black Hawks recovered Zipf's onside kick, but the Raiders (6-4) had one last gasp.

While running out the clock, Bethel Park running back Jimmy Karam fumbled and SV's Zach Eckstrom returned it to the Black Hawks 22.

But with 11 seconds remaining, Brown's desperation pass into the end zone was intercepted, the third time he was picked off in the game.

"I think (Bethel Park) probably had a good idea of the routes we were running and they jumped 'em," Butschle said of Brown's first two interceptions, which led to 10 points for Bethel Park.

The Black Hawks' first possession of the game lasted 14 plays and took 7:02, with Lyle Marsh scoring from one yard out.

SV running back James Daniels, who ended the game with 38 yards on 11 carries, scored on a 6-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter that pulled SV even at seven.

Though the Raiders' season came to an end, this year's players made sure there will be no more talk about conference losing streaks and promising seasons turned upside down.

"The players showed a lot of character and overcame a lot of adversity," said Butschle. "We were 2-3 at one point and had suffered bad losses to Baldwin and North Allegheny, and we end up with four conference wins in a row."

Notes: Plautz caught nine passes for 102 yards and ends the season as SV's all-time leader in receptions in a single season with 51. ... Brown completed 20 of 35 passes for 220 yards.
