GROVE CITY — Simple is good.

No flashy plays. No shifts. No formations straight out of the alchemy lab.

Against a team like Harbor Creek, Grove City High football coach Jeff Bell is going to keep it basic.

"We're going to cut down on our play list," Bell said. "We're going to make it as simple as possible."

But don't expect the Grove City offense to be vanilla and boring, either, when the Eagles take on the Huskies at 7 p.m. Friday at Veterans Stadium in Erie in the District 10 Class AA semifinals.

The playbook will be thinner, but Bell and the Eagles hope the results will not.

The reason for the streamlined attack is a Harbor Creek defense that likes to stunt up front and use its speedy linebackers and defensive backs to make life miserable for the opposing offense.

Just ask Sharon how effective that has been for the Huskies. Harbor Creek stunted its way to a 37-0 win over the Tigers in the playoff opener.

"When they stunt, we have to pick it up," Bell said.

Harbor Creek is 11-0, have outscored their opponents 341-76 and are averaging more than six yards per offensive play.

Despite a 9-1 record, Grove City enters the game as a decided underdog.

"I always worry about the games we're favored and are supposed to win," Bell said. "Those are the games that drive me nuts.

"Hey, they've won 11 games in a row. It's tough to win 11 games in a row. It's tough getting up to play every week. Like I told the kids, that just means they are one more week closer to losing."

These teams have some history. Grove City toppled Harbor Creek in the District 10 title game 33-7 in 2004, then opened the season the following year with a 17-5 win over the Huskies.

Eric Divell leads the Huskies' rushing attack with 1,370 yards and 19 touchdowns. AgainstSharon, he rushed for a season-high 185 yards on 32 carries.

Quarterback Josh McAnulty has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 957 yards and nine touchdowns to go with just two interceptions.

The defense is led by senior defensive back Mike Podskalny, who has a team-leading 70 tackles.

The Eagles are averaging 35 points in their last four games.

Chris Clark rolled up 160 yards against North East and Dwayne Martin was a beast in all three stages of the game with 27 yards rushing, 88 receiving, 12 tackles and an interception on defense and two long kick returns.
