Yellowjackets step forward
FREEPORT — The end result of Friday's game could not of been any sweeter for the Freeport faithful.
They saw the Yellowjackets swarm Apollo-Ridge in a 25-0 thrashing at Swartz Field.
The Vikings entered the game with a 2-0 record overall and in the Allegheny Conference, having been moved up from Class A.
The game started off slowly, with neither team pressing an advantage.
That all changed when Freeport (2-1, 2-1) scored on a 10-yard run from Andy Teorsky, who led the Freeport running game with 50 yards rushing.
It was during the second half of the game that Freeport pulled away.
With 8:34 remaining in the third quarter, Freeport linebacker Troy Zema sacked Apollo Ridge's quarterback in the end zone for a safety.
This was followed by a 4-yard touchdown run by Austin Shockey with 3:27 left in the third quarter and a 21-yard touchdown run by Tom Blythe just before the end of the period.
During the first possession of the fourth quarter, a high snap forced Apollo-Ridge punter Clay Altemose to down the ball in his own end zone for another safety.
Throughout the fourth quarter, Freeport's running game was strong while the Vikings defense could not stop the Yellowjackets.
"The kids played their hearts out and we needed this win," said Freeport coach John Gaillot. "Apollo is a very good program and I have a lot of respect for their coach, but we came out and we were focused today and we played every play with our hearts."
