JACKSON TWP — Some teams are playing for playoff position, while others are simply playing for pride.

The Seneca Valley football team was hoping to be preparing for the former, but win or lose, Friday's game at Butler will be the its last of 2008.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The winner will own the Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy for the next year. SV won last year's meeting, 27-13.

The Raiders (3-5, 0-4) have decided not to play a 10th game.

After losses to North Allegheny and North Hills by a combined score of 108-35, the Raiders suffered two heartbreaking three-point losses to Shaler (35-32) and last week to Pine-Richland (17-14), which knocked the team from the WPIAL playoff hunt.

"We're playing for pride," said Raiders coach Ron Butschle. "A win here at the end of the season won't get us to the playoffs, but it will end the seniors' careers on a high note and set the tone for the underclassmen coming back."

Friday's game will also mark the end of quarterback C.J. Brown and receiver Matt Plautz's football career at SV.

But they've left their mark on the record books.

In last week's loss, Brown and Plautz set program single season standards for passing yardage and receptions, respectively.

Brown has completed 141 of 244 passes for 2,002 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Plautz now has 57 catches for 975 yards and seven touchdowns.

"I still think we have possibly the best weapon in the WPIAL in C.J.," said Butschle.

Despite their current four-game losing streak, the Raiders are averaging 27 points per game.

One key to the offense has been Brown's ability to run. He's gained 458 yards and added 11 touchdowns, but has been held to 140 yards on 60 rushes in Northern Six Conference play.

The Raiders ground game took a huge hit with the loss of senior Tyler Mack, who broke his leg in last week's loss.

Mack, the team's leading rusher with 508 yards and six touchdowns, will be replaced at halfback by junior Evan Hetzel, who has seen time at both wide receiver and halfback.

Hetzel has unimpressive rushing stats (22 carries for 27 yards), but showed his speed and play-making ability last week with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

"It's been a long time since Evan has gotten a lot of reps as the halfback in practice," said Butschle. "But he's getting about 90 percent of them this week.

"This is a chance for him to mature as a player," Butschle added.

Butler (3-5, 0-4) has scored only 44 points in four conference games, but the Golden Tornado will bring a stingy defense into Friday's contest.

"Butler's always been a tough game for us and our kids have to understand that," said Butschle. "Coach (Jeff) McAnallen has done a good job in his time there. They are a better team than last year."
