JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley coach Don Holl isn't much into style points. Points, however, will do just fine.

With Baldwin holding a 7-6 lead in the third quarter, the Raiders scored 16 unanswered points to pin a 22-7 nonconference loss on the visiting Highlanders Friday at NexTier Stadium.

The Raiders, limited to 59 total yards in the first two quarters, countered with 157 in the second half while the defense held Baldwin to 64 second-half yards, including 25 on two passes in the closing seconds.

"It was not the prettiest thing, but it was definitely a lesson in perseverance, the kids wanting to win," Holl said.

The Raiders (1-2) entered the second half clinging to a 6-0 lead, which they gained when Luke Mueller carried a fumble recovery 46 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Baldwin (0-3) took the lead early in the third quarter after it benefitted from good field position when the Raiders were forced to punt from their own 4 and Baldwin set up shop at the SV 30.

After a 15-yard pass to Tyler Marquis from Nate Reed, the quarterback ran left on the next play and fumbled. But Baldwin's Garrett Wild recovered the ball and carried it the final 12 yards for the touchdown to give the Highlanders their first and only lead of the night.

The Raiders responded by piecing together the game's only sustained scoring drive.

Quarterback Donny Holl engineered a 12-play, 73-yard march as the Raiders converted a pair of third-and-4 plays, as well as a fourth-and-1 at the Baldwin 41, to keep the drive going.

Troy Witt scored from nine yards out with 2:31 left in the third quarter to give the Raiders the lead.

Witt sparked the drive with six carries for 32 yards, including the final three on for 23 yards.

"The difference in this team is we lost the lead, then we went and took it back," Holl said. "You have two choices there: Take your head and put it between your legs or come out and fight for it.

"Our defense all night was phenomenal," he added.

The Seneca Valley defense did clamp down, especially after the Highlanders' touchdown on the short field.

On the next three drives, Baldwin was held to minus-1 yard on 10 plays and three punts.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Raiders went on a nine-play drive that ended on the Baldwin 17 on downs.

On the Raiders' ensuing possession, Holl kept the drive alive by breaking two tackles, then dumping a 9-yard pass to Witt on a third-and-6 at the Baldwin 25.

The Raiders settled for a 36-yard field goal by Will Hugo with 2:43 remaining to take a 15-7 lead.

Baldwin fumbled on the first play of its next drive but recovered for a gain of 3 yards. Reed, however, threw three consecutive incompletions to turn the ball over to the Raiders at the Baldwin 23.

On the Raiders' third play of their next series, Witt broke off a 13-yard run to put the ball at the 1-yard line. Holl scored on the next play to seal the win.

"We've got to find a way to win," said Baldwin first-year coach Jim Wehner. "We've been together for only two months, but we have to change the mentality. We just have to win one here and we have to get better."

Holl understands about teaching a young team how to win. He's trying to do the same with his squad.

"We have a talented young team who have worked their tails off," Holl said. "We have to learn how to win the close games. Quality teams, that's what they do."
