JACKSON TWP — It's one pass Donny Holl is glad ended up off the mark.

With Seneca Valley and North Hills tied at 14 late in the fourth quarter at NexTier Stadium Friday night, the junior quarterback faced a second-and-10 from the Indians 40.

Holl took a shotgun snap and rolled to his right but soon was cornered by several North Hills defenders, one of whom appeared to drop Holl for a sack.

However, the quarterback used his left hand to stay on his feet before firing a pass he intended to sail out of bounds.

The ball stayed in play, however, and SV wideout Mike Martin outjumped a North Hills player to make the catch, then raced 15 yards to the Indians 18.

Two plays later, Holl scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Will Hugo's extra point with 31 seconds remaining gave the Raiders a 21-14 section victory.

"I was trying to throw the ball away," said Holl. "When I let go of it, I saw a glimpse of a (Seneca Valley) jersey and then I hit the ground.

"Next thing I know, Mike's weaving his way down field."

Despite the trouble Holl encountered near the sideline, Martin was waiting for the quarterback to come up with something.

"I was running an out and I saw Don roll out," said Martin. "I started to drop back to get open. I knew he'd do something with the ball. He always does."

"Mike was the primary receiver on the play, but Donny lost him when he rolled out," said SV coach Don Holl. "It was a bit of good luck, but when you work really hard, sometimes you get a break."

The Raiders received great field position for the game-winning drive when, following a Pete Vicente punt that stopped rolling on the Indians 2-yard line, NH went three-and-out and was forced to punt.

SV took over at the Indians 40 with 1:16 to play.

The Raiders led 6-0 at the half before the Indians (3-3, 1-1) scored two touchdowns within 2:04 early in the third period.

Wideout Max Creighan took a handoff around right end and raced 48 yards for the first score.

The Raiders fumbled away the ensuing possession and North Hills quarterback Taylor Schmidt capped a five-play, 18-yard drive by scoring from 2 yards out.

With 8:02 left in the third quarter, the Indians had a 14-6 lead and momentum on their side.

"We said to just take it one play at a time," Coach Holl said. "We had the lead and now we're down, OK, but now we're going to get back in it."

The Raiders (3-3, 1-1) did that by marching 70 yards on nine plays, with Holl's 8-yard scoring strike to Martin capping the drive.

Holl then hit a wide-open Randy Morris for the two-point conversion that tied the score at 14.

Hugo's two field goals in the first half made history.

His first boot of 50 yards late in the first quarter is the longest in school history.

Hugo then made good on a 42-yarder just before halftime, which was the second longest in the 46-year history of the program.

"We have a lot of confidence in Will," said Coach Holl. "He can really boot the ball."

The Raiders host Shaler (5-1, 1-1) next Friday.

North Hills coach Jack McCurry was unavailable for comment.
