HARRISBURG — About 100 teaching positions remain unfilled in six Butler County school districts this school year as a result of state budget cuts, according to a statewide survey.

The school districts in the county also reported nearly half are restricting student field trips and deferring building maintenance, nearly a third are restricting students' extracurricular activities and nearly 20 percent are delaying school construction and renovation projects.

The survey results are anonymous, but six of seven county school districts responded in August to the survey from the statewide groups Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials and Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators.

The school districts said they eliminated 183 positions, including 101 teachers, four central office administrators, one building-level administrator and 77 other employees.

Of the teachers, 25 were furloughed and 76 positions went unfilled. One administrator was furloughed and four positions went unfilled. Thirty-four other employees were furloughed and 43 positions went unfilled.

The seven districts that were asked to answer the survey are Butler, Karns City, Mars, Moniteau, Seneca Valley, Slippery Rock and South Butler.

Statewide, 294 of the state's 500 school districts responded to the survey. Altogether, they said 8,365 employee positions were lost, including 3,556 teachers. Larger class sizes have resulted, the survey said.

The Legislature and Gov. Tom Corbett cut about $930 million from the state education budget this year.
