CLARION — Moniteau junior quarterback Kyle Armagost is really hard on himself.

Armagost said he played the worst game of his life in the Warriors' 14-6 win over Clarion Friday night.

Armagost's self-described worst performance is better than most people's best. He had 182 total yards (164 rushing, 18 passing), threw for one touchdown and rushed for another, and recovered an onside kick by Clarion with less than two minutes remaining to seal the game.

"I saw the ball bounce toward me," Armagost said. "I kind of wanted to ignore the coaches, duck and run with the ball. But I went up, caught the ball cleanly and fell right to the ground."

Armagost said the recovery of the onside kick was especially important to the Warriors (1-1) after Karns City came back and beat them in Week 1.

"I messed up in the first half and that's on me," Armagost said. "But I told my guys I will continue to fight and no matter how tired they were I would push them the hardest to help lead us to victory."

The Warriors' defense had a strong performance, forcing five fumbles (recovering one), intercepting a pass and holding the Bobcats (1-1) to 115 yards of offense.

The problem for the Warriors was they couldn't convert those turnovers into points. For nearly three quarters, the Warriors were also held off the scoreboard, getting stopped in Bobcats territory three times.

"We played a tough game tonight," Warriors coach Jeff Campbell said. "But we came in with 30 kids. We lost four starters in a tough game against Karns City last week. But these kids stepped up and did a great job."

Bobcats coach Judd Allen said he felt lucky that the game stayed scoreless for as long as it did. The Bobcats didn't pick up a first down until the third quarter.

"We made a lot of mistakes on special teams, missing an extra point and snapping a ball over the punter's head," Allen said. "I thought the first team that scored would win the game."

The Warriors broke the scoreless tie late in the third quarter. After forcing the Bobcats to turn the ball over on downs, the Warriors went on a four-play, 77-yard touchdown drive.

On third-and-7 from his own 29-yard line, Armagost broke free up the middle for 58 yards. On the next play, he scored on an 18-yard run.

Armagost also connected with freshman Dustin Geagen for an 18-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to extend the Moniteau lead to 14-0.
